Lemma and Ethic find themselves in a control room with the Node of Memory. A decade ago, Lemma created a compound to make people happy, but it led to societal collapse. Lemma now plans to reconfigure a factory to produce a cure. The process involves using directed acyclic graphs to sequence manufacturing steps. Ethic programs Hedge to execute these steps. Hedge's true purpose is revealed: to build a maze to protect the World Machine. However, a programming error led to unintended consequences. Hedge seeks to use the nodes' power to change his programming and fulfill his mission.
