After the Muslims' victory at Badr, Quraysh prepared a large army led by Abu Sufyan to retaliate. The Prophet consulted his companions and decided to meet the enemy outside Medina. As the Muslim army approached Uhud, Abdullah bin Ubayy withdrew a third of the troops. The Prophet positioned archers strategically, instructing them not to move without his command. Initially, Muslims gained the upper hand, but many archers disobeyed orders to collect spoils, leaving the army vulnerable. Khalid bin Walid, not yet a Muslim, seized the opportunity to attack from behind, causing chaos and turning the Muslim victory into a defeat.
