The decision was criticized by the Archdiocese of Calcutta as a harsh Christmas gift for the poor. Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping the poor in Calcutta, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and canonized. Recently, the Gujarat police began investigating the organization for alleged forced conversions of Hindus to Christianity. Activists claim that religious minorities in India face increasing discrimination and violence since Narendra Modi's nationalist party came to power in 2014, a claim the government denies, asserting equal rights for all religions.
