Lisieux, a place of pilgrimage, is destroyed by an English/American air raid

The French pilgrimage site Licieux, known worldwide, was nearly destroyed by an Anglo-American air raid, despite being far from the battlefield. The attack left 16,000 civilians homeless and resulted in 3,000 deaths. Survivors sought refuge in nearby caves.
