Senegal's efforts to prevent Ebola by closing its border with Guinea were unsuccessful, as a student carrying the virus entered the country. The individual was quarantined and tested positive for Ebola at the Institute Pasteur in Dakar. Senegal is now the fifth country affected by the outbreak, which has resulted in over 1,500 deaths in West Africa. The epidemic, originating in Guinea, is the most severe since the 1976 hemorrhagic fever outbreak.
