USS Lafayette, formerly SS Normandie, burns and capsizes in New York Harbor in 1942

A luxury liner caught fire over Manhattan, prompting firemen to pour water in an attempt to save it. Despite efforts, the ship was gutted and left lying on its side in New York Harbor. An investigation into rumors of sabotage found no evidence, concluding that a spark from a workman's Acetylene torch caused the fire.
