A prison riot in Ecuador's Bellavista prison resulted in numerous deaths, attributed to clashes between criminal groups linked to narcotrafficking. The government, led by Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo, managed to regain control after recapturing many escapees. Since February 2021, 350 inmates have died in similar violent incidents. The country is also facing increased street violence and drug trafficking, prompting a state of exception in the most affected provinces.
