A pre-Columbian art auction took place in Paris despite protests from the Mexican government, which claims ownership of the pieces. The auction, conducted by Casa Milón, sold over 100 lots for $1.3 million. Mexico argues that the sale violates both national and international laws. An analysis by the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico found that 95 pieces are cultural heritage, while 23 are recent imitations. Mexican authorities are unsure of how the pieces left the country. UNESCO recommended postponing the auction to clarify the provenance, but it proceeded. Auctioneer Alexandre Milón praised the French authorities for not yielding to media pressure.
