In 2020, the tourism industry faced its worst year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a loss of $1.3 trillion. The UNWTO reported a 74% drop in international tourist arrivals compared to 2019, far exceeding the 4% decline during the 2009 financial crisis. The pandemic put 100-120 million tourism jobs at risk, and recovery to 2019 levels may take up to four years. Asia-Pacific experienced the largest drop in arrivals at 84%, followed by Europe with a 70% decrease, losing over 500 million travelers.
