Mad Ann Bailey: Heroine of the Kanawha Valley

Anne Bailey, born in Liverpool, moved to Virginia in 1761. After her husband's death in the Battle of Point Pleasant, she joined the Virginia militia disguised as a man, serving as a scout and courier. Known for her wild appearance, she was nicknamed 'Mad Anne' by Native tribes. She later married John Bailey and famously rode 100 miles to secure gunpowder for Fort Lee. Widowed twice, she reunited with her son and died at 83. A monument in Point Pleasant honors her legacy.
