Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty commissioned the Colosseum in 72 AD, and it was completed in 8 years. In 80 AD, Titus, Vespasian's son, inaugurated it. Initially known as the Flavian amphitheater, it was built for public entertainment, including gladiatorial combats and theatrical performances.
