The unrest began during a pandemic curfew as police attempted to evict Mapuche protesters from Curacautín. The Mapuche were supporting Celestino Córdoba, a spiritual leader on hunger strike. The eviction led to clashes, spreading violence to other municipalities. Despite the pandemic and state of emergency, violence resurged in Araucanía, with indigenous groups targeting forestry companies to reclaim ancestral lands.
