A severe storm hit Belo Horizonte, Brazil, causing significant flooding and damage. The storm, which began on a Tuesday night, led to the collapse of a shopping center roof and required emergency services to clear risk areas. Many residents were evacuated due to the threat of gas leaks and flooding in underground parking areas. The storm resulted in over fifty fatalities and displaced nearly 47,000 people, with more than 8,000 left without shelter. The states of Espíritu Santo and Río de Janeiro were also affected. January marked the wettest month in Belo Horizonte since 1910, attributed to a rare convergence of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone and a low-pressure system over the ocean.
