The UK will initiate the process to leave the EU by March 2017, as announced by PM Theresa May. This marks the first step towards making the UK a sovereign and independent nation again, with laws made in Westminster instead of Brussels. The authority of EU legislation in the UK will end. Once Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is activated, the EU will have two years to negotiate the UK's exit.
