In the 19th century, foreign nations, including the US and France, attempted to engage with Korea, but faced resistance. The Japanese, after several attempts, succeeded in opening Korea through the Ganghwa Treaty in 1876. This led to increased foreign influence and social upheaval. Despite initial resistance, Japan eventually annexed Korea in 1910 following internal strife and uprisings.
