Protests erupted in Kiev as citizens demanded an EU association agreement. Tensions rose when protesters attempted to enter government buildings, leading to police using tear gas. The demonstrations, which began on Sunday night, saw around 30,000 pro-European supporters in Independence Square. Protesters accused President Yanukovych of succumbing to Russian pressure against EU integration. Last Thursday, Ukraine halted EU association talks, citing economic reasons. The agreement was to be signed at an EU Eastern Partnership summit in Lithuania on November 28-29.
