Every year, thousands gather to remember Monseñor Romero on the anniversary of his death. The 35th anniversary is special as Óscar Arnulfo Romero is set to be beatified in May. He was assassinated on March 24, 1980, after urging soldiers to disobey orders to shoot civilians. His death sparked a 12-year civil war in El Salvador. Romero is revered for his advocacy against repression and social injustice.
