In January, a revolutionary committee declared the Ebert-Scheidemann government deposed, sparking the Spartakus Uprising. Workers occupied Berlin's newspaper district, and calls for the murder of leftist leaders Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg were published. After failed negotiations, Freikorps troops were deployed against the revolutionaries. A bounty was placed on Luxemburg and Liebknecht, who were later killed by Freikorps troops, inciting unrest across Germany. Similar conflicts arose in major cities but were suppressed. Even conservative southern Germany briefly experienced upheaval, but the Munich Republic lasted only until May, ending with the assassination of Bavarian Minister President Kurt Eisner.
