In 1500, Pedro Cabral led a Portuguese expedition to replicate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India. On the way, he claimed Brazil for Portugal under the Treaty of Tordesillas. Despite losing ships and men, Cabral established trade in India, returning with valuable goods. By 1520, Portugal dominated Southern Asian seas, shifting global trade from Venice to Portugal.
