The Battle of the Little Bighorn occurred on June 25, 1876, between Northern Plains Indians, led by Lakota Chief Sitting Bull, and US troops under Lieutenant Colonel George Custer. The battle was a result of the US breaking the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty after gold was found in the Black Hills. Custer's attack on a Native American village was poorly planned, leading to his battalion's defeat. Despite the Native American victory, they soon faced displacement. The battle is often called 'Custer's Last Stand,' a term seen by some as an attempt to glorify Custer and the US's actions.
