Blood type A people may be more likely to get traveler's diarrhea

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation reveals that a specific strain of E. coli is more likely to cause diarrhea in individuals with blood type A. Researchers from Washington University and Johns Hopkins University discovered that this strain secretes a protein that binds to sugar molecules on type A blood cells, which are also found in the gut linings of these individuals. In an experiment involving 106 healthy volunteers, those with blood type A or AB were more likely to develop moderate to severe diarrhea compared to those with blood types O or B.
