In Armenia, tens of thousands protested in the capital against the parliament's refusal to elect opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan as prime minister. The protests, which included civil disobedience, disrupted transportation and closed businesses. Armenia is experiencing an unprecedented political crisis following the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, who was elected prime minister after a decade as head of state. The ruling Republican Party, despite its majority, voted against Pashinyan, the sole candidate. A new vote is scheduled for May 8. Critics accuse the Republican Party of failing to address poverty and corruption, and allowing oligarchs to control the economy.
