Black holes are regions in space-time with immense gravity, formed from dying stars or high-energy collisions. They grow by consuming surrounding matter and are found at the center of most galaxies. Despite emitting no light, their existence is confirmed through gravitational lensing and the movement of stars. The core of a black hole is dense, possibly made of quarks, surrounded by an event horizon. Supermassive black holes, like the one at the center of the Milky Way, are detected by observing the rapid orbit of nearby stars.
