California's Transgender Inmates To Be Assigned By Gender Identity

Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law allowing inmates to choose their prison facility based on gender identity rather than birth. Officials will ask inmates if they are transgender, non-binary, or intersex, and allow them to request a men's or women's facility. Requests cannot be denied based on sexual orientation or anatomy, but can be denied for management or security concerns, which inmates can contest. Officials must use inmates' chosen pronouns.
