Who Was? Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman, born into slavery as Armenta Ross in Maryland around 1820, became a key figure in the abolitionist movement. After suffering a severe head injury as a child, she escaped to Pennsylvania in 1849, leaving her family behind. Tubman returned to the South multiple times, leading about 70 enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Celebrated as the 'Moses of her people,' she was a significant threat to slaveholders, with a bounty of $40,000 for her capture. Tubman passed away in 1913 in Auburn, New York.
