In 1982, General Ríos Montt seized power in Guatemala through a coup, leading to a violent two-year period. The UN reports that 200,000 people died or disappeared during his rule. Despite declaring innocence, Ríos Montt was tried for the massacre of 1,771 indigenous people. The court rejected his amnesty plea, linking him to genocide, a non-prescriptive crime. Even after his dictatorship, Ríos Montt remained active in politics, serving as a deputy and presidential candidate.
