Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, has been granted anti-imperialist powers by the legislative body, allowing him to govern by decree until the end of 2015 in matters of security and defense. This enabling law is intended to protect Venezuela from external interference, but critics argue it could limit individual rights. Tensions with the United States have escalated, with President Obama labeling Venezuela a national security threat. This is not the first time Maduro has sought such powers, having done so in 2013 for economic issues.
