In the early 20th century, Italy sought to expand its empire into Northern Africa, focusing on Libya after losing Tunisia to France. Italy's peaceful penetration strategy led to tensions with the Ottoman Empire, resulting in war in 1911. Despite initial successes, the conflict reached a stalemate. Italy then shifted tactics, blockading Ottoman ports and inspiring Balkan states to challenge the Ottomans. The war ended in 1912, with Italy gaining Libya and the Dodecanese Islands. However, World War I delayed Italy's control over Libya until the rise of the fascist party, which used brutal measures to suppress resistance.
