Missouri has identified a new HIV subtype for the first time in 19 years. Samples from the Democratic Republic of Congo, collected in 1983, 1990, and 2001, were analyzed using Next Generation sequencing technology. This technology allowed scientists to build a complete genome sequence from the third sample, leading to the identification of the HIV1 group M subtype L. Current HIV treatments are believed to be effective against this new strain.
