The bid carries political weight as Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, is a rival of President Erdogan, who has a history of unsuccessful sports diplomacy attempts. Despite the official bidding process not yet starting, London has also shown interest in hosting the 2036 Games.
