The World's Next Ocean

In 2005, a series of earthquakes and the eruption of the Dabbahu volcano in Afar, Ethiopia, marked significant geological activity. This event was part of the ongoing rifting process in Eastern Africa, where tectonic plates are pulling apart, forming the Great Rift Valley. This region is a hotspot for seismic activity, with thousands of earthquakes recorded. The rifting process is similar to what occurs at the ocean floor, creating seafloor ridges. Eventually, the Horn of Africa is expected to split from the continent, forming a new ocean. This provides a unique opportunity for geologists to study tectonic processes on land.
