Ecuador has successfully repatriated 536 pre-Hispanic artifacts from Germany, including statues, necklaces, and tools made of gold, stone, and ceramics. This return was facilitated by the heirs of Josef Rettinger, a German who lived in Ecuador. The legal status of the artifacts' initial removal is unclear, but Ecuador considers the international transport of archaeological goods a serious crime. Since 2010, Ecuador's Commission against Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property has recovered over 13,000 cultural items.
