Belgium accused the Netherlands of failing to inform the EU about fipronil contamination in eggs since November 2016. Millions of eggs were withdrawn from markets across several countries due to contamination. The Belgian Ministry of Agriculture presented a report on the contamination to EU commissions, revealing fipronil presence in Dutch eggs for nine months. The first alert was received in June from a self-control test. Dutch and Belgian authorities launched a joint investigation to determine the role of companies in the contamination. Fipronil, commonly used in veterinary products, is banned in food production. The health crisis, initially detected in Germany and Belgium, has spread to France and the UK.
