In the early 1960s, America was engaged in a space race, which sparked interest in extraterrestrial life. Frank Drake and his team, part of a government-funded project, explored the potential intelligence of dolphins as a model for understanding communication with other intelligent species. This interest led to funding from NASA and other agencies for John Lilly to build a state-of-the-art laboratory, known as the Dolphin House, to study dolphins and their intelligence.
