In 1863, the Confederate Army built Andersonville in Georgia to hold Union soldiers. Designed for 10,000, it soon housed over 30,000, leading to severe overcrowding and disease. Despite the appearance of Providence Spring, which provided water and hope, nearly 13,000 soldiers died. The camp was liberated in 1865, and its commandant was later hanged for war crimes. Andersonville is now a national cemetery, memorializing those who perished in the worst Civil War prison camp.
