Cardiff Castle, built by the Normans in 1081 on a Roman fort, became a symbol of Cardiff's growth. In the 1860s, John Crichton-Stuart transformed it into a Gothic Revival masterpiece with architect William Burgess. During WWII, it sheltered 1800 people. In 1947, it was donated to Cardiff. Nearby, Red Castle, designed by James Burgess, is a medieval-style fortress. Described as a fairy tale castle, it reflects the architectural dreams of its patrons.
