Gorgona Island, a small volcanic landmass off Colombia's coast, is known for its dense jungle and deadly wildlife. Once a nightmare for explorers, it became a notorious prison in 1959, housing Colombia's most dangerous criminals. Modeled after Nazi camps, it was infamous for human rights abuses. The island's natural dangers, including venomous snakes, deterred escape. After the prison closed in 1984, nature reclaimed the island, with animals inhabiting the abandoned structures.
