Ethel Payne, known as the first lady of the black press, was a pioneering journalist who held those in power accountable. Born in 1911 in Chicago, she began her journalism career after documenting discrimination in Japan. She joined the Chicago Defender in 1951, focusing on the struggles of women and people of color. In 1952, she became the second black woman in the White House Press Corps, challenging President Eisenhower on civil rights. Despite his dismissive responses, she persevered and later became the first black female commentator on CBS. Ethel Payne's career was marked by her relentless pursuit of truth and justice.
