Beneath the Antarctic ice sheet lie around 675 subglacial lakes, discovered since the 1990s. Among them, Lake Vostok, found by Russian researchers, is the largest, located 4 km beneath the surface. It is the sixth largest lake globally by volume, surpassing Lake Michigan. Its discovery coincided with Tiger Woods' professional debut.
