Benjamin Banneker, born free in 1731, was a self-taught mathematician and astronomer. He invented a wooden clock and developed a friendship with the Ellicott family, who were Quakers and abolitionists. Banneker created an almanac and contributed to the surveying of Washington, D.C. He advocated against slavery and corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, leaving a legacy of challenging racial inferiority notions.
