Singapore generated 16.3 billion pounds of solid waste in 2022, with nearly half ending up in its only landfill, Semakau, which is nearing capacity. To address this, Singapore employs incineration, converting waste to energy and reducing landfill waste to 3%. The process generates electricity for 240,000 households but also produces ash, which is transported to Semakau. Environmental measures are in place to prevent contamination. With the landfill projected to fill by 2035, Singapore aims to increase recycling rates and explore recycling incinerated ash. The government is working with universities to find sustainable solutions.
