The caste system in ancient India, established around 1500 BCE, was an economic and social structure based on heritage, known as varna. It aimed to ensure equality and societal harmony by assigning roles based on birth. The system was divided into four main groups: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (traders), and Shudras (laborers). The Aryans, who introduced the system, based it on the Manusmriti, a Hindu law book. Despite its historical roots, the caste system continues to influence Hindu society today.
