Mary McLeod Bethune was a pioneering African-American educator and activist. Born in 1875 in South Carolina, she founded a school for girls that evolved into Bethune-Cookman University. Bethune was a national figure, advising several U.S. presidents and co-founding the United Negro College Fund. She was the only Black woman at the founding of the United Nations. Her legacy is being honored with a statue in the U.S. Capitol, representing Florida.
