Miguel Hidalgo, a Mexican priest, led a revolt against Spanish rule, sparking the Mexican War of Independence. Born a Creole, he was educated in theology and became a prominent academic. His revolutionary activities began after Napoleon's invasion of Spain. Hidalgo's famous 'Cry of Dolores' speech in 1810 called for revolution, leading to widespread support. Despite initial successes, his forces were eventually defeated. Captured and executed in 1811, Hidalgo became a martyr and symbol of Mexican independence, celebrated annually on September 16th.
