After the Vietnam War, North and South Vietnam unified in 1976, renaming Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City. Many South Vietnamese were sent to re-education camps, and a large number fled the country. The economy suffered due to abolished private property and free market policies. Vietnam engaged in conflicts with Cambodia and China, leading to further economic strain. In 1986, economic reforms were introduced, allowing private property and free market practices. Relations with the US improved in the 1990s, and by 2000, Vietnam had an economic agreement with the US. Today, Vietnam is a major coffee exporter and tourist destination, though human rights issues persist.
