The Caribbean consists of three main island chains: the Lesser and Greater Antilles, and the Bahamas. Early inhabitants included the Savonius, Tainos, and Caribes. Columbus discovered the islands in 1492, leading to European colonization. The Spanish initially settled, followed by the British, French, and Dutch. The islands became centers for sugar plantations, leading to the forced migration of African slaves. Over time, many Caribbean nations gained independence. The region is also known for its pirate history and is now a popular tourist destination.
