By 800 A.D., the Maya civilization began to decline due to overpopulation, food shortages, and wars. The cities fell into ruin and were overtaken by the jungle. In 1521, Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo sought to conquer the Yucatan, but the decentralized nature of the Maya made it difficult. It took 170 years for the Spanish to conquer the last Maya city. The Spanish brought diseases like smallpox, decimating the Maya population. They forced the Maya to convert to Christianity and work as slaves, destroying their sacred texts and statues. Despite being a Spanish colony for over a century, the Maya preserved their language and culture. In 1820, they gained freedom, but their way of life was forever changed.
