Hirohito, born in 1901, was Japan's emperor from 1926 to 1989, making him the longest-reigning monarch in Japanese history. Educated in Tokyo, he developed a passion for marine biology. As Crown Prince, he traveled to Europe, and later became Emperor in 1926. His reign, known as Showa, saw Japan's militaristic expansion and eventual defeat in WWII. Hirohito's role during the war is debated, but he ultimately accepted Japan's surrender in 1945. Post-war, Japan became a constitutional monarchy, and Hirohito became a symbol of unity. His public engagements and modernizing actions, like allowing his son to marry a commoner, increased his popularity. He was succeeded by his son Akihito in 1989.
