The Battle of Bull Run, fought on July 21, 1861, was the first major battle of the Civil War. Union and Confederate forces clashed near Manassas Junction, Virginia. Initially, Union forces seemed to have the upper hand, but Confederate reinforcements led by General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson turned the tide, resulting in a Confederate victory. The battle had significant casualties on both sides and dispelled any illusions of a quick war. It galvanized the North, leading to increased enlistment and a change in Union command. The battle marked the beginning of a long and grueling conflict.
