In Florida, record-breaking cold temperatures have led to efforts to save tropical sea turtles. NASA's Kennedy Space Center, along with Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and other groups, have rescued over 270 cold-stunned turtles. Cold stunning occurs when water temperatures drop below 60°F, causing turtles to become lethargic. The rescued turtles are being cared for in warmer facilities and will be released back into their natural habitats once the weather improves. The last significant cold stunning event in Florida was in 1989.
